Game Jams

What is a game jam?

A game jam is a hackathon for videogames. People get together to develop games in a short period of time (usually 24h to 72h).

You can find a calendar with many game jams here:

What do you think about game jams?

I think game jams are great for motivating you to get something done in a short period of time. It is usually a safe place to try new game development approaches and experiment with areas you are not used to working. It is a good creativity exercise and they can be used to create valuable memories and to tighten bonds with teammates.

On the other hand, people that only work on game jam games will never experience larger projects pipelines. Continuing a project and managing larger and more complex structures require experience that game jams cannot provide. How will you ever have a polished product if you only make 48h games?

Ah, one more thing: I think that the “game jam culture” supports the notion that crunching is OK - which it is not. Let’s work together to change that toxic work culture as it is not acceptable anymore.
